The Star & Lamp
Objective: “Remember the magazine you received as a student? You get to make it now, run with it.”
First published in the fall of 1909, the Star & Lamp is the magazine of Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity and is produced in-house. As the official publication of the organization, the Star & Lamp serves as a forum of communication to educate, inspire, and move to action members on fraternity, Greek, and men’s issues.
From primary designer to the creative director (while still designing), this magazine evolved from a rinse-and-repeat brochure to an industry, award-winning publication.

2016 – 18: Eat (no Sleep), Design, repeat
While still in the early phases of the organizations’ rebranding, there was a strict emphasize on sticking to the layout and template. While collaborating with the creative team and art director, we were able to re-envisioned the design aesthetics for the various features departmental reports.
During this time, my sole focus was in designing a multitude of spreads and layouts with the restrictions of brand colors and treatments. Much of the content was brought in from various parties.

2019: I am the captain now
When the reigns was passed to the new director, the team and I dove into the magazine aesthetics and content and introduced more experimental design and features.
Through vigorous research on design and surveying the various target audiences, we discovered the importance of expanding the brand to celebrate the diverse and innovative stories and efforts of the organizations.

2020: what do we do?
The problem is after designing and directing seven magazines, how do we break the mold and create something out of the normal? With the curveball of COVID-19, we were given a rare opportunity to rethink our Internal process and design development.
While collaborating with the copywriter, we make it a priority to have engaging stories stand out from one another with design that complements the article rather than solely the brand of the various organizations.
